나는 작년 어느날 지인으로부터 도성마을에 대한 얘기를 전해 들었다. 우리가 살고 있는 가까운 곳에 소외되어 지고 있는 이웃이 있다는 사실에 마음이 아팠다. 거기는 한센인들이 살고 있었던 마을 이었다. 내가 고등학교 다녔을 즈음에 몇 번 가봤던 애양원이라고 불리는 곳과 가까운 곳에 있었다. 나는 무작정 도성마을로 향했다……나의 생각속에 있었던 마을의 이미지와 너무 달랐다….. 도성마을을 본 나는 차마 말을 이을 수가 없었다. 썩은 악취 때문에 머리가 아프기 시작했고 석면으로 알려진 스레트 지붕은 위험 천만해 보였으며 바로 앞에 위치한 산업단지의 굴뚝에서 솟아 나오는 연기는 나를 극심한 공포에 힙싸이게 만들었다. 과연 이들은 이런 곳에서 어떻게 살고 있었을까? 조금전에 지나쳤던 어린 아이들의 얼굴에서는 볼 수 없었지만 그들이 어떻게 살아 왔는지는 충분히 느낄 수 있었다. 내가 이 마을을 위해 무엇을 할 수 있을까? 이곳 저곳 마을의 소식을 전해 보았지만 어떤 도움도 받을 수가 없었다.. 화가인 내가 할 수 있는 작은 일부터 해보기로 결심했다. 곧 허물어 질 것같은 폐허처럼 보이는 빈 축사의 벽면에 벽화를 그리고 이웃들의 관심을 모아 보기로 했다. 지난 10개월동안 도성마을의 주민들을 만나 많은 얘기를 나눌 수 있었으며 어린 아이들에게는 친구가 되었다. There are people who suffer from leprosy. The village was close to Aeyangwon that I have been to a few times when I was a high school student. I thoughtlessly headed for Doseong Village.... It was so different from the image of the village in my mind..... Seeing there, I was shocked to silence. The rotten smell made my head ache, and the slate roof, known as asbestos, seemed to be dangerous. The smoke rising from the chimney of the industrial complex, located right in front of the village, has left me in a state of intense fear. How did they live in these places like this? I couldn't feel the pain from the smiling faces of the children I just passed, but I could feel enough how they have lived. What can I do for this village? I've reported the situation of the village here and there, but I couldn't get any help. As an artist, I decided to start with the little things I could do. I decided to paint murals on the wall of empty stable that looks ruined and is about to fall apart. Then people began to show interest. Over the past 10 months, I have been able to meet the people of the village and talk a lot with them, and I became a friend to the young children.
